President Joe Biden has warned that the United States will stop supplying specific weapons to Israel if it undertakes a major ground operation in Rafah, a densely populated city in Gaza. This warning represents one of the strongest U.S. responses to Israeli military plans amid ongoing conflicts in the region.

During an interview with CNN, President Biden explicitly stated that the U.S. would not provide the weapons historically used in operations in Rafah if Israel decides to advance. He emphasized the need to ensure Israeli security but expressed clear opposition to actions that could lead to extensive civilian casualties in Gaza.

The area in question, Rafah, is a critical point in Gaza, serving as a major stronghold for Hamas and a key entry and exit point for aid and civilians fleeing the conflict. U.S. officials have expressed concerns that an Israeli ground operation could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis, leading to a high number of civilian deaths.

Further complicating matters, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed a delay in a significant bomb shipment to Israel while testifying before the Senate, reflecting the administration’s cautious approach to military support in light of potential ground assaults. The Israeli military and government have expressed disappointment over the U.S. decision, noting the impact it could have on their military capabilities.

The backdrop to these developments includes ongoing ceasefire efforts and negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Cairo, aimed at resolving the conflict that has led to a severe humanitarian situation in Gaza. The talks also focus on the exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, highlighting the complex geopolitical and human rights issues at play.

President Biden’s remarks come amid increasing domestic pressure from some Democrats and the broader U.S. public to moderate Israeli military actions in Gaza.
