A powerful image circulating on Instagram has captured global attention, depicting orderly lines of tents on dusty ground with white structures spelling out “All eyes on Rafah.” This image has been shared by over 37 million users as of Wednesday morning, becoming a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The surge in social media activity follows a tragic incident on Sunday, when an Israeli air strike targeted an area in Rafah housing displaced Palestinians, igniting their tents. According to Palestinian medics, the strike resulted in the deaths of at least 45 people. Verified footage from Sky News showed bodies being pulled from the wreckage, including that of a decapitated child.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the strike as a “tragic mistake.” An Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson suggested that much of the destruction was caused by a subsequent fire, which they claimed could not have been solely ignited by the munitions used in the attack.

The image and its message, “All eyes on Rafah,” have been amplified by numerous celebrities, including Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, singer-songwriter Kehlani, and Indian actor Varun Dhawan. Pop star Dua Lipa also shared posts featuring the same phrase, reflecting widespread support for the Palestinian cause on social media.

The phrase “All eyes on Rafah” appears to have originated from Rik Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization’s representative in Gaza and the West Bank, who declared it as Gaza faced an extension of Israel’s ground invasion in February. The image itself is believed to be one of the first viral activist artworks created using artificial intelligence.

While the image has gone viral, actual photos and videos depicting the aftermath of attacks in Gaza are often hidden behind sensitive content warnings on social media platforms. This has led activists to question why an artificial image is gaining more visibility than real footage from the ground.

The image has drawn comparisons to the black square shared during the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, which faced criticism for being performative without accompanying action.

As the conflict continues, the “All eyes on Rafah” image stands as a potent symbol of global attention and solidarity, raising awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
