Mosques in Gaza have announced the death of Hamas military commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad following an Israeli airstrike.
The strike targeted a residential building in the Rimal neighbourhood of Gaza City. Israel said it had aimed at Haddad, although there was no immediate confirmation at the time of the strike that he had been killed.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz said they had authorised the operation, describing Haddad as a senior figure within Hamas’s military wing.
In a statement, they said he was involved in planning attacks and held responsibility for actions against Israeli civilians and soldiers.
A senior Hamas official later confirmed Haddad’s death to Reuters.
