The Taliban is grappling with its first nationwide police brutality scandal following a shocking incident in Faryab province. Local Taliban police commander Qari Akka has been accused of brutally punishing a teenage boy, Gul Mohammed, for the crime of talking to a girl over the phone.

The punishment involved penetrating the boy with a stick, resulting in Mohammed being hospitalized in critical condition for the past 10 days. For the first time, such a punishment was filmed, and the video has gone viral across Afghanistan, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation. We will not be sharing the video as it is too extreme.

In response to the intense public pressure, the Taliban released a statement claiming they have arrested the police commander responsible for the brutal act. However, there is significant skepticism among the public regarding the authenticity of this claim, given the Taliban’s history and reputation.

The incident has highlighted severe human rights abuses under the Taliban regime and has put the group under unprecedented scrutiny. The video’s circulation marks a significant moment in Afghanistan, raising questions about the Taliban’s governance and their commitment to justice and human rights.

As the situation unfolds, the international community is closely monitoring the Taliban’s actions to see if they will genuinely hold the perpetrator accountable and address the systemic issues that allowed such an atrocity to occur.
