Umar Mahmood, an 18-year-old who appeared on the BBC show Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams, has tragically died following a car crash in Preston, Lancashire. Mahmood was critically injured after an Audi A3 Sport veered off the road and collided with trees on Tuesday. He was taken to hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

Another teenager, 16-year-old Adam Bodi, was also killed in the crash. Both were former pupils of Penwortham Priory Academy, with Umar having finished his studies two years ago.

Umar gained recognition in 2022 through his appearance on Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams. The documentary series, led by former cricketer Freddie Flintoff, sought to form a cricket team from teenagers in Flintoff’s hometown of Preston. The show aimed to challenge the stereotype that cricket is a sport only for middle to upper-class, privately educated children, offering opportunities to young people from lower-income areas.

In an interview during the show, Umar expressed his love for cricket, sharing that he had been involved with his local youth team before being selected for the series. He described the experience of training with Freddie Flintoff and former cricketer Kyle Hogg as transformative, noting how they taught him various cricketing skills.

The crash has deeply affected the local community, with tributes pouring in for both Umar and Adam. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
