Two men have been jailed after driving at extreme speeds while inhaling nitrous oxide before crashing into another vehicle and killing a man in south Manchester.
Uways Hussain, 20, and Usmon Mahmood, 23, were involved in a high-speed drive through Manchester in the early hours of March 9, 2026, during which Hussain reached speeds of up to 139mph.
Footage recovered from Hussain’s phone showed him driving one-handed while inhaling nitrous oxide, with Mahmood in the passenger seat encouraging the driving and filming parts of the journey.
The pair were seen overtaking vehicles at high speed, driving on the wrong side of the road and ignoring traffic signals.
At a junction on Kingsway in Burnage, Hussain drove through a red light and collided with a Volvo driven by Sylvester Abayomi, 50, who was travelling to work.
Data from the vehicle showed the car was travelling at 99mph at the point of impact. Mr Abayomi suffered fatal injuries and died later that morning.
Following the collision, the Volkswagen Golf spun and caught fire. Hussain’s Apple Watch automatically alerted emergency services.
Despite this, the pair were recorded discussing claiming the vehicle had been stolen and how to avoid being identified before leaving the scene.
Police later tracked them using digital data, locating Hussain hiding in a nearby garden.
Hussain, of Burnage, was sentenced to 11 years and eight months in prison for causing death by dangerous driving, causing death while uninsured, conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, failing to provide a specimen and driving without insurance.
Mahmood, of Levenshulme, was sentenced to 12 years and nine months for aiding and abetting causing death by dangerous driving, aiding and abetting causing death while uninsured and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
Both men were disqualified from driving for five years, with an extended period of eight years.
