Two pedestrians have died and four other people have been seriously injured after a pick-up truck struck a group of people before becoming involved in a multi-vehicle collision in Doncaster.
Emergency services were called to White Rose Way at around 11am on Sunday, September 13.
South Yorkshire Police said a black Mitsubishi L200 had been travelling along the carriageway when it collided with a group of four pedestrians.
The Mitsubishi was then involved in a collision with a black Audi and silver BMW travelling on the opposite side of the carriageway.
Two pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of emergency crews.
Four other people were taken to hospital suffering serious injuries which police said were not believed to be life-threatening.
Driver Arrested On Suspicion Of Causing Death By Dangerous Driving
The 30-year-old man driving the Mitsubishi was arrested following the collision.
He was detained on suspicion of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit.
South Yorkshire Police said he has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
No charges have been announced.
Police were working to formally identify the two people who died and inform their next of kin.
Air Ambulance Sent To Scene
A major emergency response was deployed to White Rose Way, including an air ambulance.
The incident happened between Carriage Drive and Middle Bank Roundabout.
The road was cordoned off while emergency services treated casualties and collision investigators examined the scene.
Detectives are now appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage as they work to establish the exact sequence of events.
Latest In Series Of Devastating Opposing-Traffic Crashes
The Doncaster deaths come after a series of exceptionally serious crashes in recent weeks involving vehicles travelling into opposing traffic.
Police have not said that the Mitsubishi in Sunday’s Doncaster collision was deliberately being driven the wrong way. The confirmed account is that it struck pedestrians before becoming involved in collisions with vehicles travelling on the opposite side of White Rose Way.
However, the incident follows two major wrong-way crashes in Britain and Ireland which together left 12 people dead within days of each other.
Seven Killed In Wrong-Way A66 Crash
On August 22, seven people were killed in a head-on collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough.
A Volkswagen Passat carrying five young men entered the dual carriageway travelling in the wrong direction before colliding with a marked Cleveland Police armed response vehicle.
The five occupants of the Passat — Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, and Cole Worthy, 17 — were killed.
Cleveland Police officers PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, also died.
Police later said the five occupants of the Passat had significant links to serious and organised criminal activity.
A separate vehicle had earlier been pursued by police before officers abandoned that pursuit around 10 seconds before the Passat entered the A66 in the wrong direction.
The collision triggered a major investigation across Teesside.
Five Teenagers Killed In M9 Wrong-Way Collision
Just days before the A66 tragedy, another devastating wrong-way crash occurred on Ireland’s M9 motorway.
Five teenage boys died after a BMW travelled southbound along the northbound carriageway near Moone in County Kildare during the early hours of August 16.
The BMW collided head-on with a Hyundai travelling correctly along the motorway.
Three women and a seven-year-old boy inside the Hyundai suffered serious injuries.
The victims in the BMW were aged between 15 and 18.
The crash prompted renewed debate in Ireland about drivers deliberately entering motorways in the wrong direction and the difficulties faced by police when attempting to stop them.
Police Appeal For Doncaster Footage
South Yorkshire Police stressed that the precise circumstances behind Sunday’s Doncaster collision remain under investigation.
The force said: “We are appealing for any witnesses, and anyone who may have dashcam footage, following a fatal road traffic collision in Doncaster over the weekend.”
