Rockstar Games has broken its silence over the extraordinary series of GTA 6 gameplay leaks that have circulated online ahead of the company’s official extended look at the game.
The developer described seeing footage of Grand Theft Auto VI leak in this manner as “heartbreaking” for its team and acknowledged that players have now been exposed to parts of the game in a way Rockstar never intended.
In a statement addressing the community, Rockstar said: “We know that many of you have been waiting to hear from us regarding the events of the past week.”
It added that having GTA 6 gameplay videos leak “has been heartbreaking for our team”, saying this was “obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time”.
The company also apologised for the lengthy development and information drought surrounding the game, saying it was sorry that everything had taken as long as it had, from completing the game to providing official gameplay and further details.
Significantly, Rockstar described GTA 6 as “nearly there”.
The company confirmed its extended look at the game will be shown tomorrow and reiterated that GTA 6 is scheduled for release on 19 November.
CyberLeek Releases Another Clip
Rockstar’s intervention follows days of leaks attributed to an anonymous figure operating under the name CyberLeek.
The leaker has gradually released what appears to be footage from a playable GTA 6 build rather than publishing all of the material simultaneously.
Previous clips have purported to show elements including driving, aircraft, vehicle damage, NPC interactions, locations, radio stations and other gameplay systems.
CyberLeek has also used polls to determine which footage should be released next, with cryptocurrency payments being used to influence voting.
The unusual approach has turned the leak itself into an ongoing event, rather than a conventional one-off dump of stolen or unauthorised material.
CyberLeek had previously indicated that the leaks would stop if Rockstar apologised and addressed demands relating to physical game ownership and consumers’ ability to resell games.
One message accompanying leaked material stated: “They want to take your rights to resell.”
It continued: “The peaceful route got us nowhere.”
Rockstar has now apologised publicly, but not for the issue raised by CyberLeek.
Instead, its apology concerned how long GTA 6 has taken to complete and how long fans have waited for official gameplay and information.
Following Rockstar’s statement, CyberLeek released further footage.
Rockstar Says Leaks Could Spoil Intended Experience
Rockstar acknowledged that the leaks may have already affected how some players experience GTA 6 when it eventually launches.
The company said it was unfortunate that the “intended game experience” may now be affected by spoilers and asked players to wait until November to experience the finished game themselves.
Rockstar also thanked members of the GTA community who had sent messages of support to the development team during the leaks.
The company said it remained determined to deliver GTA 6 at the standard players expect despite the disruption.
Could The Footage Have Come From A Preview Build?
Attention is also turning towards how CyberLeek may have obtained apparently extensive access to GTA 6.
The confirmation that a GTA 6 preview event took place last month potentially offers one explanation, although there has been no confirmation that the leaked material originated there.
If a dedicated preview build was prepared for external demonstrations, the footage could potentially have originated from a build distributed or used during that process rather than from Rockstar’s primary internal development environment.
That possibility could also help explain one noticeable feature of the leaked videos: the apparent absence of prominent development and debugging interfaces.
Internal game builds frequently contain diagnostic information, developer tools or other interfaces that would not normally be visible to players.
The footage attributed to CyberLeek instead appears to show a relatively clean gameplay interface despite exhibiting characteristics consistent with unfinished software.
That does not establish where the build originated, and there is currently no publicly confirmed evidence linking the preview event itself to CyberLeek.
Leaks Have Revealed Gameplay Systems
Among the footage attributed to CyberLeek are clips apparently showing protagonist Jason travelling through the game world, driving vehicles and interacting with NPCs.
One sequence appears to continue from an earlier basketball scene at Jason’s home in Key Lento before showing him entering a Vapid ’70 Ganado and travelling to a petrol station.
The footage appears to demonstrate dynamic vehicle suspension, tyre smoke and detailed vehicle damage.
Another sequence appears to show an NPC filling the bed of a truck with fuel before being confronted by a petrol station worker.
Other footage has appeared to demonstrate the ability to resist an NPC attempting to remove the player from a vehicle, extensive vehicle destruction and a slow-motion “Wasted” screen.
The footage has also fuelled speculation about GTA 6’s economy after an interface apparently suggested Jason’s carried cash may have a limit, with additional money potentially stored at a safehouse.
Another apparent interface element appears after an objective involving Lucia and resembles a positive relationship or reputation indicator, although its exact purpose has not been officially confirmed.
Vice City Shown At Night
A separate leaked sequence apparently shows Jason piloting a stunt plane over Vice City at night.
The footage appears to show illuminated buildings, boats and yachts, dense traffic and extensive reflections across the water.
Buildings visible from the air appear to use simulated interior depth, while the scale of the city and airport shown in the footage has attracted considerable attention among GTA fans.
Construction cranes are also visible, prompting speculation that some parts of the game world could change as the story progresses, although Rockstar has not confirmed that buildings will dynamically be completed over time.
Fishing also appears to feature in the game, with individual species apparently identified in particular areas.
Several purported radio stations and songs have additionally appeared in the leaked material, although content contained in unfinished builds can change before release.
Rockstar Faces Continuing Leak Problem
The leaks have emerged at a particularly sensitive time for Rockstar, immediately before the company is due to provide its own extended look at GTA 6.
Attempts have been made to remove unauthorised footage as copies spread across social media and other platforms.
CyberLeek, meanwhile, has largely operated through a separate website rather than maintaining a conventional public social-media presence, complicating efforts to contain redistribution once material is released.
The leaker has previously demonstrated apparent access to the game by publishing carefully selected gameplay footage rather than relying solely on screenshots or second-hand claims.
Some polls associated with the leaks have also attracted significant payments. In one instance, a payment worth about $1,200 was reportedly made towards a vote for footage labelled “Nudist Town”.
The escalating spectacle has meant the leaks themselves have become part of the wider GTA 6 story just as Rockstar prepares to take back control of how the game is presented.
Rockstar’s extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for tomorrow, while the company continues to list 19 November as the game’s release date.
