Indian superstar Diljit Dosanjh paid tribute to legendary Pakistani qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as he became the first Punjabi artist to headline London’s Wembley Stadium.
Dosanjh performed at the iconic venue on Saturday as part of his Aura World Tour, with his team saying around 90,000 people attended the concert.
Taking to the Wembley stage, the 42-year-old celebrated the scale of the moment with his now-famous declaration: “Punjabi aa gaye oye!” meaning “Punjabis have arrived”.
The show marked another milestone in the international rise of Punjabi-language music, with one of South Asia’s biggest contemporary artists taking over a venue associated with some of the most famous performers in music history.
Tribute To Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
One of the most striking moments of the night came when Dosanjh performed “Sanson Ki Mala Pe”, a song closely associated with the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
Fans across the stadium raised their phone lights as Dosanjh delivered his rendition of the classic.
The performance brought together two generations of Punjabi and South Asian music on one of Britain’s largest stages an Indian Punjabi star paying tribute to one of Pakistan’s most internationally recognised musical figures.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who died in 1997, became globally renowned for bringing qawwali to audiences far beyond South Asia and remains a major influence on artists across Pakistan, India and the wider music industry.
Around 90,000 Attend Wembley Concert
Dosanjh’s team said approximately 90,000 people attended the Wembley performance.
Wembley Stadium has hosted some of the most famous concerts in British music history, including performances involving Michael Jackson, Queen, Madonna, David Bowie and U2.
Saturday’s concert marked the first time a Punjabi singer had headlined the stadium.
The achievement is particularly significant given that Dosanjh has built much of his global career performing primarily in Punjabi rather than switching predominantly to English-language music.
Punjabi Music’s Growing Global Reach
Dosanjh has combined traditional Punjabi sounds with modern pop, hip-hop and electronic influences, helping him build an audience stretching considerably beyond India and the Punjabi diaspora.
His Wembley appearance follows several other landmark moments.
In 2023, Dosanjh became the first Punjabi artist to perform at California’s Coachella festival.
The following year he appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, bringing Punjabi music to one of America’s best-known television programmes.
His growing international profile has coincided with a wider expansion of Punjabi music on global streaming platforms and international concert circuits.
Wembley Joins Growing List Of Milestones
Dosanjh’s Aura World Tour has continued that expansion, taking his live show to major venues and audiences internationally.
The Wembley performance was particularly symbolic for Britain’s large Punjabi community, with Punjabi culture and music filling a stadium regarded as one of the country’s most recognisable national venues.
