What We Learned From Rockstar’s Huge 26-Minute GTA 6 Gameplay Preview

After more than 18 months without a substantial official glimpse of Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar Games has finally pulled back the curtain and its 26-minute Extended Look revealed far more than another conventional trailer ever could.

There was no developer sitting in front of a camera explaining features. There were no lengthy captions telling viewers what they were seeing.

Instead, Rockstar largely allowed GTA 6 to speak for itself, showing an extended montage of gameplay encompassing robberies, relationships, police chases, gunfights, nightlife and an enormous selection of activities across the fictional state of Leonida.

The presentation debuted on Netflix six hours before its wider YouTube release, giving players their first prolonged official look at GTA 6 in action.

Coming immediately after a week of unauthorised gameplay leaks that Rockstar described as “heartbreaking”, it was also the first opportunity for the developer to show GTA 6 on its own terms.

So, what did we actually learn?

After more than 18 months without a substantial official look at Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar Games has finally shown 26 minutes of gameplay and we learned a lot.

The Extended Look focused heavily on Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, confirming that players will be able to switch… pic.twitter.com/IRfMEOjjtP

Jason And Lucia Really Are At The Heart Of GTA 6

Rockstar has never hidden the fact that Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are GTA 6’s protagonists, but the Extended Look demonstrated just how central their relationship appears to be.

This isn’t simply a case of two characters who happen to participate in the same missions.

Their relationship appears embedded into the game.

Rockstar developers have revealed that the player’s actions can influence how Jason and Lucia’s relationship develops, although players will also be able to effectively opt out of pursuing their bond.

The gameplay itself showed the pair working together during criminal activities and quieter moments.

During one sequence involving a drug bust at an apartment building, Jason helps Lucia escape by lowering her from a window.

Elsewhere, players are presented with small contextual interactions between them, including the option to hold hands.

It suggests Rockstar wants their relationship to exist outside scripted cutscenes and become something players interact with throughout the game.

Character Switching Is Back

GTA 5’s defining feature of switching between Michael, Franklin and Trevor is returning.

The Extended Look showed the perspective pulling away from one protagonist before moving across the world and settling on the other in a manner immediately familiar to GTA 5 players.

Jason and Lucia can therefore apparently be controlled independently at different points.

There were also sequences where control appeared to change during action scenes.

What remains unclear is how much freedom players will have when both characters are physically together and whether switching between them during missions can be performed instantly.

The Graphics Are Remarkably Detailed

Much of the reaction to the footage has understandably focused on how GTA 6 looks.

Character faces feature extremely detailed animation, including subtle expressions rather than simply exaggerated movements during dialogue.

Clothing also reacts dynamically to movement. Jason’s T-shirt, for example, visibly folds and moves around his body rather than appearing attached to the character model.

Hair, jewellery, skin, reflections and environmental lighting all received similarly detailed treatment.

But perhaps more impressive than individual characters is how Rockstar appears to maintain that fidelity across extremely busy environments.

Leonida Looks Packed With People

Open-world games frequently create impressive environments only for streets and interiors to feel strangely empty.

The GTA 6 footage suggests Rockstar is attempting something very different.

Numerous scenes contain dozens of people simultaneously, often with highly detailed character models.

Nightclubs are crowded. Streets appear busy. Rooftop venues are populated rather than simply serving as elaborate scenery.

There is also considerably more variety in the appearance of background characters, including different ages, builds and body shapes.

If the final game can maintain that population density during normal gameplay, it could make Leonida feel substantially more alive than Los Santos did in GTA 5.

Rockstar Has Not Abandoned GTA’s Satire

One question surrounding GTA 6 has been whether the series’ famous satire could survive a modern America that can sometimes appear more absurd than the fictional versions depicted by Rockstar.

The Extended Look suggests Rockstar has no intention of abandoning it.

Fictional television advertisements and other material shown during the presentation continue to parody American consumerism and culture in a style immediately recognisable as Grand Theft Auto.

The tone also shifts between serious criminal drama and deliberately ridiculous characters and situations.

GTA may look considerably more realistic, but Rockstar does not appear to be turning it into a completely serious crime simulator.

Robbery Appears Central To Making Money

Jason and Lucia commit a lot of crimes during the 26 minutes.

That may sound like an obvious observation about a game called Grand Theft Auto, but the number of robberies shown appears significant.

The pair are repeatedly involved in heists and hold-ups, including what appears to be the robbery first shown in GTA 6’s original trailer.

This could indicate that smaller robberies form a recurring way of earning money rather than every hold-up being a bespoke story mission.

How much freedom players have to choose and plan those crimes remains unknown.

Police Chases Look Considerably More Cinematic

Several large-scale pursuits appear throughout the footage.

One sequence shows Jason firing from the rear of a moving vehicle as police cars and helicopters pursue the protagonists.

Another involves a fellow robber entering their getaway vehicle during the escape.

Vehicles crash, police units converge from different directions and characters continue interacting while the pursuit unfolds.

Rockstar appears to be trying to make chases feel less like an endless procession of identical police vehicles and more like dynamic action sequences.

Gunplay May Have Changed Considerably

It is difficult to judge how a game actually feels from watching somebody else play it, but there are several clues about GTA 6’s combat.

The shooting appears faster and more fluid than GTA 5 in the footage shown.

There also appears to be a slow-motion ability during combat.

Whether this is an ability specific to Jason or Lucia, a general mechanic, something connected to weapons or simply part of a particular mission remains unclear.

The presentation also contained sequences reminiscent of tightly choreographed action films, suggesting Rockstar has taken inspiration from modern cinematic gunplay.

We May Have Seen Destructible Environments

One particularly interesting moment occurs during the apartment drug raid.

A character sends a police officer crashing directly through a wall.

It could simply be a scripted moment created specifically for that mission.

But if the destruction is systemic rather than scripted, it could point towards considerably more interactive environments than previous GTA games.

Rockstar did not explain the mechanic and there was not enough evidence elsewhere in the footage to determine how extensive destruction will be.

For now, it is something to watch rather than a confirmed major feature.

There Are Small Interactions Everywhere

One of the less spectacular but potentially more important revelations concerns contextual interactions.

Button prompts appear allowing characters to perform mundane actions such as taking a drink or holding hands.

These are not necessarily objectives.

Instead, they appear designed to allow players to interact naturally with whatever their character is doing at that moment.

It resembles Rockstar’s approach to Red Dead Redemption 2, where seemingly insignificant interactions helped make its world feel less like a collection of mission markers.

Rockstar May Be Reducing The Hand-Holding

Another interesting detail was what wasn’t visible.

The footage contained comparatively few instructions constantly telling players where to go or what to press.

Red Dead Redemption 2 could sometimes present players with numerous contextual prompts and instructions during missions.

GTA 6’s footage appeared much cleaner.

Rockstar may simply have disabled much of the interface for presentation purposes, however, so it is too early to conclude that the final game will actually operate this way.

Text Messages Have A New Presentation

Phones have become increasingly important to GTA as the series has evolved, but GTA 6 appears to be experimenting with how information from them is presented.

At one point, messages appear visually alongside the character rather than requiring the player to constantly stare down at a conventional phone interface.

It is a small detail, but one that could make conversations feel more integrated into gameplay.

Lucia Has A Lot Of Different Looks

Character customisation is clearly returning.

Lucia in particular appears dramatically different across the footage, with numerous outfits and hairstyles.

At one point she appears to be wearing a wig.

Jason also changes clothing throughout the presentation.

Rockstar’s decision to repeatedly showcase those changes appears deliberate and suggests clothing and appearance will remain a significant customisation system.

GTA 6’s World Looks Enormous

The Extended Look jumped between radically different environments across Leonida.

There are dense urban areas, beaches, waterways, swamps, luxury skyscrapers, apartments, clubs and open countryside.

Water appears particularly important.

Players are shown using several different types of boats and watercraft, while other sequences take place beneath the surface.

The Florida-inspired geography appears to be more than a backdrop for Vice City. Rockstar seems determined to make the wider state a substantial part of the experience.

There Are A Huge Number Of Activities

Perhaps the clearest indication of the game’s scale came from the activities briefly shown throughout the presentation.

Players appear able to take part in basketball, scuba diving, weightlifting, swimming, kayaking, motocross, base jumping, shooting activities and some form of motorsport.

Airboats can be driven through swamps.

Jet skis appear.

Players can fly a seaplane.

Various boats can be taken onto the ocean.

There are scenes involving sunbathing and binoculars, while one particularly unusual moment appears to show someone being observed while using virtual reality.

Strip clubs also return.

Many of these sequences lasted only seconds, so precisely how substantial each activity will be remains unknown.

Basketball Is Definitely More Than A Leak Now

Basketball is particularly notable because it was among the activities seen during the recent unauthorised gameplay leaks.

The Extended Look now gives players an official glimpse of basketball within Rockstar’s presentation of the game.

That does not necessarily tell us how deep the mechanic is, whether players can participate freely across the map or whether it is restricted to particular characters or missions.

But its presence in Rockstar’s own footage removes some of the uncertainty created by the leaks.

Social Media Is Everywhere

GTA 6’s parody of social media has been evident since the first trailer.

The Extended Look suggests it may be even more deeply incorporated into the world.

One car chase appears to be livestreamed, with fictional comments appearing alongside the footage.

Whether this is simply part of one mission or whether NPCs can dynamically record and livestream events caused by the player remains unknown.

If it is systemic, it could become one of GTA 6’s more interesting ways of making Leonida react to the player’s behaviour.

Movie Homages Are Still Here

Rockstar has spent decades borrowing imagery and situations from crime films and action cinema.

That tradition continues.

One later sequence involving Jason and Lucia inside a skyscraper has strong echoes of Die Hard, including Jason acquiring a walkie-talkie and disposing of an enemy using a lift.

Other gunfights have the fast, choreographed feel associated with modern action films.

GTA 6 may be technologically far beyond its predecessors, but Rockstar’s love of cinema remains obvious.

Some Things Still Look Very Familiar

Not everything is a revolution.

Characters still have lengthy conversations while driving, much as they did in GTA 5.

Character switching appears visually similar to the previous game’s system.

There are still police chases, robberies, shoot-outs, clubs and eccentric supporting characters.

That may actually be one of the most important conclusions from the presentation.

GTA 6 does not appear to be abandoning Grand Theft Auto in pursuit of technical realism.

It looks more like Rockstar taking familiar GTA systems and attempting to make the world surrounding them dramatically more detailed.

What About GTA Online?

For everything Rockstar showed, one enormous question remains unanswered.

What happens to GTA Online?

The Extended Look concentrated on the single-player experience and provided little meaningful information about Rockstar’s multiplayer plans.

That is significant because GTA Online transformed GTA 5 from an enormously successful game into a product that remained commercially relevant for more than a decade.

GTA 5 has sold more than 200 million copies, while its online component is believed to have generated billions of dollars.

A successor therefore seems inevitable, but Rockstar has yet to properly reveal what the GTA 6-era online experience will look like.

And There Is Still Plenty Rockstar Hasn’t Explained

Twenty-six minutes sounds substantial, but Rockstar managed to show an enormous amount while actually explaining very little.

We still don’t know the full extent of the map.

We don’t know how extensive environmental destruction is.

We don’t know precisely how Jason and Lucia’s relationship system works.

We don’t know how deep the activities are.

We don’t know whether livestreaming is a genuine open-world mechanic.

We don’t know exactly how combat has changed.

And we still know almost nothing about the next generation of GTA Online.

What the Extended Look has finally provided is a much clearer picture of Rockstar’s ambition.

GTA 6 appears to combine the enormous open-world sandbox of Grand Theft Auto with some of the environmental detail and slower interactive elements Rockstar developed for Red Dead Redemption 2, while dramatically increasing population density, visual fidelity and the number of activities occurring around the player.

After a week in which unauthorised footage allowed somebody else to dictate much of the conversation around GTA 6, Rockstar has now shown players the version of Leonida it wanted them to see.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026.
