The Maldives government has announced a ban on Israeli passport holders from entering the Indian Ocean archipelago, renowned for its luxury resorts. This decision comes as public anger intensifies in the predominantly Muslim nation over the ongoing war in Gaza.

The president’s office released a statement on Sunday confirming that the Cabinet has decided to amend laws to prevent Israeli passport holders from entering the Maldives. Additionally, a subcommittee will be established to oversee the implementation of this ban.

President Mohamed Muizu is set to appoint a special envoy tasked with assessing the needs of Palestinians and initiating a fundraising campaign to support them.

In response to this announcement, Israel’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Oren Marmorstein, advised Israelis to avoid traveling to the Maldives, including those holding foreign passports. He also suggested that Israelis currently in the Maldives consider leaving the country.

The Maldives has been a popular tourist destination, with nearly 11,000 Israelis visiting last year, representing 0.6% of the total tourist arrivals.

The decision to ban Israeli passport holders reflects the Maldives’ stance on the Gaza conflict and its support for the Palestinian cause.
